Names of God — El

“The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”  Exodus 15:2

The translated name God appears twice in this verse, but only the first instance of it is translated from the Hebrew name El. We will see the meaning of the second one in 3 weeks.

The name El appears alone more than 200 times in the Old Testament. I specify “alone” because it often appears as part of other names of both God and men. El Shaddai, for example, is a name of God that we will study in a few weeks; Elisha was a prophet of God whose name meant “God is salvation”.

This name means strength and power, and would have meant to the Israelites that with a powerful God on their side, they could overcome any obstacle. See also Numbers 23:22 and Deuteronomy 7:9.
